RFID, or Radio-Frequency Identification Tags are single-use tags which attach a unique identifier to plants and packages, giving operators the ability for each item to be tracked individually throughout its lifecycle. RFID tags possess a 24-digit UID (unique identifier)along with the RFID transponders that allow for remote reading of the tags, along with information identifying the facility name, business license number, the date the tag was ordered, and a barcode.
There are 2 types of tagged inventory in cannabis operations: plants and packages. Metrc-provided RFID Tags are required to be on both plants and packages as per the regulations in Oregon. A complete list of CTS tracking requirements for OLCC and Medical Marijuana Registrants in the OLCC system can be found on the Secretary of State's website.
How Much Do Tags Cost?
Each state that uses Metrc varies in how it charges for tags. In Oregon, the OLCC requires operators to purchase their own tags at a cost of $0.45 per plant tag and $0.25 per package tag. Each tag can be used once and can sit at only one facility at a time, and thus cannot be reused (except in special cases such as if it was discontinued first and then able to be reused).
What Are Plant Tags?
Plants can be either immature, vegetative, or flowering, and start out entering the system as immature plant batches. According to OLCC rules, each immature plant batch may consist of no more than 100 plants of the same strain and must be identified by a unique name. Once they achieve the flowering phase, OLCC rules require that plants be individually tagged with plant tags.
What Are Package Tags?
Packages can be created from immature plants, harvest batches, testing lab samples, as well as split off from existing packages. These tags have an adhesive and must be attached to the container with the package in it as the packages are created / split off. These tags are used for transferring packages as they progress through the chain of custody from seed to sale.
How to Order Tags?
Tags can be ordered from the Admin > Tag Orders tab at the top right of the Metrc login as shown above. Once there, users can click on ‘New Tag Order’ to place a new order by selecting the number of tags, shipping details, and making a payment.
Users can then track the shipment using the tracking number and then come back into this section to click ‘Receive’ once they have received the shipment of the tags.
